A warm light – literally

I love winter, especially when it’s gray outside and I’m indoors all cosied up in a sweater, sipping hot chocolate whislt reading a page-turner. And I’m not about to give my lamps and source of light the cold shoulder. (OK, this sounds lame.) For the full winter effect, I’ll order a couple of Casamania Granny knitted pendant lamp shades, one in each of the two sizes and colors – off-white and raspberry.

Made from thick wool sheared from sheep in the Alpine valleys of Tyrol in Austria, these boho hanging lamps are then knitted in Holland. And you don’t worry about a fire hazard or holes for the wool is treated to make it fire-resistant and repellent to moths.

Adopt a baby, get a Barbie

There exist a zillion types of Barbie dolls out there, from Mad Men characters and Twilight vampires to pop stars like Cyndi Lauper and dolls perched in miniature Louboutin heels. But there is one doll that you won’t be able to buy at a toy store. It’s called the Going Home Barbie and you’ll have to adopt a Chinese baby to get one.

According to the October issue of Marie Claire, “The special-edition doll is given exclusively to Westerners  who adopt babies from China and who stay at the White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou, China. Toy maker Mattel has been donating the doll to the hotel since 2001.”

There is a different model doll every year.

If you think adopting may be too much of a hassle to get a Barbie doll, there are plenty of Going Home Barbies available on eBay and I even saw one listing on Amazon. (Click here to check it out.)

There are also plenty of websites devoted to Going Home Barbie centering around adoption, such as the Going Home Barbie Project.

Phrazes We Could (Should) All Use

Inside the sleeve of his solo album Phrazes For The Young, Strokes singer Julian Casablancas links a “phraze for the young” to each of the eight tracks. Depending on where you are in your life or in your head, these maxims, inspired by the Oscar Wilde essay Phrases And Philosophies For The Use Of The Young, can come in pretty handy.

1. Anger is weakness, patience is strength.

2. Try not to give advice you can’t follow.

3. Art is the image of life, its purpose simply to enhance it.

4. Being nice is most important when others are not.

5. Drunkenness is cowardice, sobriety is loneliness.

6. People don’t want to be greedy, they want to be happy. But they’re often too greedy to notice.

7. Talk about those absent is if they were listening in.

8. Unlocking life’s mysteries is the responsibility of dissatisfied people.

Twitter: The Movie, A Biopic In More Than 140 Characters

If Facebook’s founders deserve a movie (The Social Network), then so do Twitter’s, right? Well, the guys at Rated Awesome thought of this “other” popular social network and reveal Ev and Biz’s (mis)adventures in the founding of the 140-character blog in an official biopic full of classic tweets and lines, such as:

-Call 911.

- Are they on Twitter?

Without further ado, here’s the trailer for Twitter: The Movie. You may recognize the soundtrack from some other trailer…

For my dad

A former basketball star, he was also a heavy smoker. He succumbed to lung cancer in Paris, France on June 21, 1995. By the time he was diagnosed (there were practically no physical signs), the cancer had already spread. He only survived six months so I never got a chance to say goodbye.

One of the last movies we watched together was Gilda. He was a huge fan of Silvana Mangano, but Rita Hayworth wasn’t bad either, he used to say! (My mom looked like her when she was younger!)

Here’s that iconic scene from Gilda where Hayworth performs “Put the Blame on Mame”, for my father, who is now probably roaming the streets of Paris, the city he so loved.
