Phrazes We Could (Should) All Use

Inside the sleeve of his solo album Phrazes For The Young, Strokes singer Julian Casablancas links a “phraze for the young” to each of the eight tracks. Depending on where you are in your life or in your head, these maxims, inspired by the Oscar Wilde essay Phrases And Philosophies For The Use Of The Young, can come in pretty handy.

1. Anger is weakness, patience is strength.

2. Try not to give advice you can’t follow.

3. Art is the image of life, its purpose simply to enhance it.

4. Being nice is most important when others are not.

5. Drunkenness is cowardice, sobriety is loneliness.

6. People don’t want to be greedy, they want to be happy. But they’re often too greedy to notice.

7. Talk about those absent is if they were listening in.

8. Unlocking life’s mysteries is the responsibility of dissatisfied people.
